emphasis on "undervalued"

From Numbers Are Male, Said Pythagoras, and the Idea Persists:
"female scientists and engineers are underpaid, undervalued and underrepresented in the top tiers of science."

So now a civil engineer is in the top tiers of science?

And have you found the reason for your occupational angst--discrimination?!

Umm...I believe you're reading a little too deeply into my posting on this issue.

First of all, engineers could be in the top tiers of science. Am I? No. (Whoever said anything to that effect?) Can I still be undervalued? Yes.

And I never had to look very far to find the reason for my occupational angst: I never wanted to be a secretary, and it's somewhat ironic, and most painful, that after 6 years of rigorous technical education, I'm scanning in 415 page documents and doing tedious data entry...

The question is, though, whether you feel you are getting these lower-level tasks specifically because you are a woman.

Well, not at first, and not altogether: being new, and there being little work (so they claim) is part of it, but I feel like my being a women definitely exacerbates the situation. If I were male, I think they would at least hesitate before giving me some of these tasks for weeks on end…But I suppose men are just conditioned to treat women as secretaries …Especially in the scientific field….
