AVOID MY CRISIS: BACK UP YOUR FILES!

My laptop decided to have an “electronics problem,” something the tech guy said he gets calls about multiple times a day. Basically, windows won’t start up unless I reset the system and lose everything stored on my hardrive: all my files, programs, pictures, music, emails…I’m going to visit the tech support people on campus tomorrow with the hope that they might be able to extract my stuff and save it before I reset. But henceforth, I vow to chronically back everything up...

If nothing else there are complete OSes that run entirely off of CDs, and you could boot up off of those and access your hard drive and transfer data that way. One is Knoppix (a distro of linux, free)...it's slow, though.

I tried...First the MIT people, but they didn't want to mess with my laptop since the hard drive was hard to get to, so I took over to the MicroCenter, and they retrieved my hard drive, connnected it up to another computer, and it seemed hopeful, but for some reason, they couldn't access the storage...But I have reason to suspect that the guy didn't know what he was doing--And now I regret not taking it back to the MIT people before resetting the system.

I thought I had more backed up then I did...But turns out, I hadn't backed stuff up since August, and I didn't back up photos, music, or other such trivialities.

Most devistating! On Thursday and Friday I decided that I didn't really care too much, but now that I'm realizing the extent of "my loss," I can't help being a little sad.

Sorry for your loss :(

I should be more careful...I've just been hoping nothing bad will happen, especially with the gigabytes and gigabytes of music I have (some if it's on CDs, but that was a long time ago). If you want me to send you any music (on CD or otherwise), Id' be happy to...I need to update my list of what I have first, though.

Thanks very much. I don't actually care too much about my music, and I still have the stuff you gave me on CD's...

Thankfully, becuase I did have some stuff backed up from August, and I had uploaded the better photos to snapfish, the whole thing is not too terrible (some of the more annoying things that I lost was a cover letter, a newly revised resume, and this semester's work...and my pictures of course). It's all virtual possessions anyhow...I think of it this way, only five years ago, I didn't have a computer, files, emails, music, a digital camera, etc., so it's really no big deal to have lost some of what I didn't have and was perfectly fine without not too long ago...
